A right royal new year

georgeV.jpg

Characterful illustration by Riikka Sormunen for the cover of David Cannadine’s ‘George V – the unexpected king’, one of the Penguin Monarchs series that I received for Christmas.

One fact I found interesting was that George V, as with his son George VI, was not the heir expected to take the throne. Cannadine’s analysis of how George V’s lack of interest in his cousins in Russia, the Balkans and Germany proved to be an asset for the country post-First World War was also thought provoking although it could spark some different conclusions today.
