‘The Campbell Sisters dancing a Waltz’ – by Lorenzo Bartolini
Lady Charlotte Bury (nee Campbell, daughter of the 5th Duke of Argyll) had SIX daughters, and these are the youngest two, Emma and Julia. Fashionable names and fashionable Greek dresses, the statue dates from c.1820, just right for triggering a Georgette Heyer reading spree.
The statue was displayed in the dining room at the Duke of Argyll’s castle, until being demoted to the garden. Can you imagine the embarrassment of turning up to visit your grandparents, only to find a giant statue of yourself in the dining room?
