Wild and dreamy

I love this performance of the Elgar cello concerto so much I sent it to my cello-playing friend Charissa as part of a bouquet of music.

In particular, I love how Sol Gabetta gets the underlying toughness and wildness of this piece, in a way that got the first time allowed me to hear it alongside Elgar’s larger-scale works, in particular the turbulent 2nd symphony and the stretching harmonies of Dream of Gerontius. Some beautiful woodwind playing from the orchestra here too.

It seems someone else is a fan, as Sol Gabetta will be opening the first night of the Proms this year with exactly this piece.
